ABSTRACT

Much more than a collection of individuals receiving counseling together in one room at the same time, group counseling or psychotherapy is a distinct form of intervention that provides therapeutic experiences not readily available in other forms of treatment. Particularly for children and adolescents, group counseling interventions offer numerous advantages. Groups offer a safe place for children and adolescents to connect, gain peer support and acceptance, and share feelings and challenges (DeLucia-Waack, 2006). The interpersonal experiences that occur in groups challenge the myth of uniqueness by emphasizing universality, and offer hope and models for change. Groups also provide children and adolescents the opportunity to help and support others at the same time that they are receiving help and support.
