ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the wide range of treatment populations and needs addressed by group therapy in residential treatment programs. We will examine the advantages and obstacles to providing group treatment in a residential setting, along with offering suggestions to ameliorate some of the more persistent difficulties presented by work with this population. We will explore some trauma-related learning and processing issues that are prevalent in many of the youth who are served in these programs. Finally, we will offer some effective techniques that are adaptable to a variety of groups for children and adolescents in residential treatment.
