In 1933, Harvard professor George Birkhoff developed a scientific aesthetic measure expressed in a mathematical formula.1 In 1993, Clifford Madsen, Ruth Brittin, and Deborah Capperella-Sheldon measured aesthetic responses by means of a Continuous Response Digital Interface.2 What exactly were they measuring? What is an aesthetic response? In fact, what does the word aesthetics mean?
