ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the development of the various exhibitions, their aims and inspirations. It examines the engagement between the museums and Steampunk artists, how a real synergy and affinity between the museums and this newly included community group has been able to develop which expands interpretive possibilities. The chapter investigates the motivations behind Steampunk at the Museum of the History of Science. It explores how the exhibitions in London, Bradford and Leek not only introduced Steampunk to a wider UK audience. The chapter demonstrates how Steampunk material culture contributes to contemporary interpretations of both science and art. It explains the initial motivation for the exhibition and asks what the participatory process tells about museum engagement with members of the Steampunk community. The variety in venues demonstrates the versatility of Steampunk and the range of organisations keen to engage with community. It may appear to be steam technology driven geek culture, but it offers both community-produced heritage and precision-made art.
