ABSTRACT

A query letter is a sales tool that requires creative writers to think differently. The purpose of the letter is not only to pitch writers screenplay in an alternate way when they cannot do it in person, but to innovatively and concisely construct something that in a glance, grabs the attention of the producer, director, agent, sales agent, reader, or assistant and entices them to ask to read writers script. This chapter examines some of the steps for constructing a query letter: have a completed screenplay that writers feel is ready to be read; write a compelling opening paragraph; include the title; include a brief synopsis; and include writers contact information. There are several online query letter services, such as Virtual Pitchfest, InkTip, and PitchQ. If possible, a writer should have an attorney review the submission release so that the writer fully understands what he or she is signing and being legally bound to.
