ABSTRACT

The son of James David and Amelia Marsden Glass, Montague Marsden Glass was born in Manchester, England on July 23, 1877. His father owned a prosperous linen and cotton manufacturing concern in Manchester with offices in New York. Young Glass studied Hebrew with Samuel Green, an Australian who may well have been the source for his large stock of Yiddish stories. In 1890, Glass's family moved to New York City. After proving inept at business, Glass attended City College of New York from 1891 to 1893 and studied law at New York University from October of 1895 to February of 1897. In 1909, Glass began full-time writing to support himself and his wife, Mary Caroline Patterson Glass, whom he had married in 1907. For several years, he had been writing stories featuring Abe Potash and Mawruss Perlmutter, partners in the cloak and suit trade. His work was soon appearing in such high-circulation magazines as Life and Cosmopolitan.
