ABSTRACT

The Youth Bike Summit (YBS) is an annual event that brings together educators, activists, students, teenagers, practitioners, researchers, policy makers, and community leaders to engage around youth, bicycles, education, and advocacy. This chapter introduces Jane Pirone and Pasqualina Azzarello, explains their involvement, and presents an overview of what the YBS is and how it came to exist. It lays out a theoretical framework informed by transdisciplinary design concepts and community-focused youth empowerment goals that is then used to frame three themes drawn from analysis of a series of interviews with these two key YBS figures. The description of YBS' work to disrupt traditional organizational processes provides a perspective that is relevant beyond bicycle advocacy by exploring the challenges inherent in creating youth-led spaces. The chapter concludes with insights relevant to other bicycle advocacy efforts and implications for work with youth and communities.
