ABSTRACT

The first thing that the author thinks about when it comes to capitalization and punctuation is cellphones. His thoughts float first to phones because we all have either seen students send – or we have sent ourselves – text messages where capital letters were missing or punctuation has been incorrect, especially in the age before autocorrect. Teachers can teach the rules of capitalization and punctuation over and over again – and correct those same errors in their essays – but our students are still going to forget some of the rules. The author highlight just a few activities that have helped his students become better at remembering capitalization in their own writing, even in an era of autocorrect. Punctuation is a huge subtopic of grammar that is obviously part of the CCSS. Teaching grammar in a digital age is – and will remain – a challenge for all.
