ABSTRACT

Chile is notable for its stable trade policy and the rapid negotiation of trade agreements with countries and regions all over the world. At the time of writing, it has 24 agreements with 63 countries that cover 94 per cent of the country’s total exports (DIRECON 2015).1 Trade policy has remained constant through time but especially across regimes and governments. The dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet introduced radical deregulation and increasing liberalization on a unilateral basis while also participating in multilateral negotiations under the GATT.
