ABSTRACT

The Triangle of Knowledge is simple to create, yet sometimes difficult to understand. It can be used to increase tension to an already tense section of the script, or to add tension to a scene when it is missing. On screen, however, withholding this knowledge keeps the audience curious and engaged in what would otherwise be a mundane scene. The Triangle of Knowledge is a useful tool when writing an adaptation. The Storyteller's Parallax is an additional layer to the Triangle of Knowledge, created by the Storyteller manipulating important information within a scene or sequence. Imagine taking the Triangle of Knowledge and creating a pyramid by adding "The Storyteller" as a fourth entity who has knowledge within a scene. Two powerful examples of the Storyteller's Parallax in use can be found in The Usual Suspects and No Country for Old Men.
