ABSTRACT

Capacity refers to having the mental, emotional, or physical ability to accomplish a certain task. In schools, capacity building is the process of developing the individual's or organization's ability to learn new ways of thinking and acting so they may make the changes required to improve learning for all students. In schools, organizational capacity refers to the entire faculty's collective competence to strengthen student performance in every classroom. The five key dimensions of capacity: teachers' knowledge, skills, and dispositions; principal leadership/distributed leadership; program coherence; professional community; and technical resources—influence teachers' instructional quality. All five capacity dimensions are related, and each one has the potential to affect one or more of the others. Professional learning communities (PLCs) rest on the idea of improving student learning by improving teacher practice. Teacher leadership occurs in three main areas: Leadership of other teachers and students; Leadership of operational tasks; and Leadership through decision making or partnership.
