ABSTRACT

Marx analyses the relationship of absolute and relative surplus-value production. Marx terms absolute surplus-value production also the formal consumption of labour under capital and relative surplus-value production the real consumption of labour under capital. Relative surplus-value production is absolute because there is a part of the working day split off from necessary labour-time namely: surplus labour-time so that the working day is absolutely longer than necessary labour-time. Marx shows that the introduction of large-scale industry for increasing relative surplus-value production by increasing productivity. Marx knew that capitalism tries to overthrow the productive forces to accumulate more capital by technically intensifying the exploitation of digital labour and to understand the political economy of Facebook and similar online platforms, some scholars found it useful to introduce the notion of digital labour. Smythe's approach has resulted in a sustained debate on the nature of commercial media within the field of the critical political economy of media and communication.
