ABSTRACT
Some directors love the research and conceptualizing that leads up to a production. Some directors love the collaboration of the design process. Still other directors love the reveal of opening a show to an audience. The more the actors do their homework and dig into their roles, the more they are going to take the lead in the development of their characters. Every actor has his or her own method for getting off-book, and student actors spend a lot of time figuring out which method works best for them. With the companies and shows that most young directors start out working with, director will have to manage the process of getting actors off-book. After working through the show with the actors off-book, then progress to run-throughs of the show. This period in the rehearsal process is when begin to pull back from stopping and starting and working directly.
