ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the second case study of this book, which focuses on the investigation of translation as a language contact phenomenon. The aim is to examine how cleft and pseudo-cleft constructions might have developed in Greek popular science as a result of contact with English popular science translations through time. The chapter determines the time frame for the diachronic analysis and explains why this genre and linguistic features have been chosen. It also offers a detailed examination of how cleft and pseudo-cleft constructions are realised in English and Greek, which informs the research parameters for the corpus analysis in Chapter 8.
