ABSTRACT

The creation of the Force of Radical Orientation for the Young Argentina supported the nationalistic ideological stance of the followers of Yrigoyen. After the military coup of 1943 and the rise of Juan Perón as the dominant political figure, the idea of keeping Argentina an open-market economy more in the circle of influence of the USA than in the traditional British sphere clearly lost ground. In spite of all the political conflicts and British discrimination, under the Justo government the Argentine economy was able to recover faster than those of the USA and Canada thanks to the ability of a group of young economists led by Federico Pinedo. The deterioration of domestic terms of trade for agricultural exports affected the incentives to invest in agriculture. Agricultural production first declined and then recovered, but on average remained almost stagnant between 1929 and 1945.
