ABSTRACT

Is leadership needed in activities that require the efforts of experts? Experts in a particular area are distinguished from non-experts by the fact that they are largely responsible for planning and managing their own efforts as well as by the fact that they are usually responsible for evaluating these efforts (Maister, 1993). This is true, for example, when physicians make diagnoses and provide treatment, when attorneys counsel clients, when teachers evaluate students, or when management consultants advise organizations.
