ABSTRACT
In this chapter the starting point must be the birth o f the Boy's Own Paper or BOP, as it was from the beginning popularly known, because it was for that journal as a serial that Reed wrote The Fifth Form at S t Dominic's (1881/2). This and the other school stories that he wrote before his early death in 1893 very soon defined readers’ expectations o f what a school story should be.
