ABSTRACT

This chapter emphasizes the notion that the act of writing itself can yield solutions, but the authors have to be persistent. It provides a powerful space for the designer to work through the design process together, drawing and writing in the design notebook. The chapter indicates throughout keeping a design journal aids developing a habit of writing and engages the designer-writer in the tasks of problem setting and solving, developing and clarifying thoughts, and practicing. It shows that both designers' journals deployed images and the writing to help begin the process of critical reflection. The chapter indicates at the beginning, a habit of journaling will not always directly translate into other writing projects. It provides a space for one to try out ideas, develops those ideas, solves design problems, rehearses one’s language, and prepares one for the work of other writing assignments that are more focused on specific purposes, audiences, and structures.
