ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with a presentation of a conceptual model of doping in sport and the discussion of the findings of a large study examining this model in soccer players. Based on research on morality in sport, three potential distal predictors of doping were identified: performance motivational climate, moral atmosphere, and moral identity. As well as identifying distal predictors of doping, it is important to investigate mediators. Three variables could act as mediators of the effects of performance climate, moral atmosphere, and moral identity on doping. These are: ego orientation, moral disengagement, and anticipated guilt. The moral disengagement is expected to mediate the effect of moral atmosphere on doping. The moral atmosphere of the team, reflected in players' perceptions of their coach and teammates' behavior, together with their moral identity could have a profound influence on one's intention to use banned substances and subsequent doping behavior.
