ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book aims to debate some of the main issues relating to vocationalism in higher and further education, such as the policies, curriculum, learning and teaching and work contexts. It focuses on the diversity of vocationally related programmes. The book discusses the applicability and relevance of the conventional term 'vocationalism' in the light of current developments relating to higher vocationalism, such as higher vocational education, occupation, employability and professionalism. It describes the education of teachers with occupational experiences who teach on occupation-related/vocational programmes in the further education sector in England. The book also focuses on the vocationalism in higher (HE) and further education (FE) which aims to bring together into a 'Reader' a selection of academic experts to report and discuss their findings from many years of evidence-based research on vocationalism at three levels in England - macro, meso and micro.
