ABSTRACT

Improving the construction sector's efficiency is seen as a major gain. The ambition to achieve it has resulted in pressure over the years to move to more collaborative procurement. In order to collaborate people need to share managed digital project data of the kind supported by building information modelling (BIM). In spite of the readily available evidence, the idea that the use of BIM means that construction projects will be quicker, cheaper, safer, and better meets with scepticism from some. But evidence suggests that most sceptics are those who have not used BIM. BIM users are very positive about the new technology and culture. The enthusiasm of design and construction teams for using BIM arises because they have found that using BIM brings benefits to them, there are carrots as well as sticks. The benefits of using BIM to project participants ramp up through the project timeline.
