ABSTRACT
Let us be grateful to Professor Stephenson for throwing a well-aimed stone at one of the more respected and less respectable idols in the scientific pantheon. For 50 years most psychologists have ignored or treated as an embarrassing mystery what whey quaintly call self-rewarding activity. Professor Stephenson has the courage to make a theory about it—or about part of it.
