ABSTRACT

This chapter contains a very brief introduction to animal welfare, followed by a thought experiment. It is followed by a short discussion and then a series of questions. Metaethicists are interested in whether the moral talk can be thought of as true or false. Some, most notably John Mackie, argue that all moral claims are systematically and uniformly false with a thought experiment. It gives some key points on moral judgements as abolitionism claims that moral practice should go the same way as other false talk such as fairy and witch-talk, people should abandon it. The questions are intended to get the philosophy students thinking about the problems. They have used these kinds of questions in seminars as the questions set for seminars, so they also think that they can be used to spark conversation and discussion. The chapter also gives a cursory sketch of some of the ways in which philosophers have responded to thought experiment.
