ABSTRACT

The term lifelong learner has been used so much that it sounds trite. Yet, we are in contact with administrators, teachers, parents, and community members every day who reflect this "can't get enough" enduring philosophy about professional learning. The idea of building Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) has been around for over a decade, and for many educators this model of collaborating with colleagues around common goals for school improvement continues to thrive. Collaborative teams continue to report their results to the building-based group devoted to school improvement, but it looks a lot different. General topics to be addressed include an understanding of Standards-Based Education, strategies for literacy instruction, and sheltering instruction for students. Specifically, for educators in a dual language setting, they see the importance of comprehending the theories related to immersion programs and bilingual education.
