ABSTRACT

This chapter explains human impacts associated with a fore mentioned changes to the structure of agriculture and the broader food system. The tradition is especially strong in the USA, where the traditional rural community has been perceived as coming under threat by broader structural changes both within and outside of agriculture. According to the research, features like absenteeism, contract farming, dependency on hired labor, and operation by farm managers seem far more likely to place communities at risk than if surrounding farms lack these characteristics. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has also been reported among residents living near CAFOs. The environmental consequences of our food system are routinely discussed, as evidenced by the growing popularity of organic food and talk about food miles. The Bossi-Fini Law has been criticized for exposing migrant workers, who are already at risk of labor exploitation because of their migration status, to an increased risk.
