ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes selected adaptations of “Beauty and the Beast” to various media in order to reflect upon their influence on the dynamics and functions of romance. From literary retellings to big-screen dramatizations, to TV shows, to comics, video games, and transmedial constructs, subsequent appropriations of the fairy tale not only present different ways of handling genre formulas, but also introduce medium-based innovations. As a result, subversive and affirmative approaches to the characterization of protagonists and their relationship enter into a culturally productive dialogue.
