ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a brief account of the development of Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Bangladesh. It discusses the political dimensions of NGO activity. The chapter focuses on Sharique as a practical example of how NGOs work in Bangladesh. The majority of the NGOs welfare activities require registration with the Department of Social Welfare. The growth of NGO-centred organizational development in Bangladesh has occurred due to a number of reasons. Today social development and NGO activity are used synonymously in Bangladesh. In a country like Bangladesh, the main focus of NGO activity is on the formation of social capital and community empowerment. The majority of NGOs are working to create opportunities and resources in the form of education, skills, social networks and employment. Grass-roots mobilization, as a means of empowering the local community in general and women in particular, has been adopted by different national and international NGOs in Bangladesh.
