ABSTRACT

This book has focused on the experiences of Access to HE students and the impact that undertaking the Access to HE Diploma has had on their lives. It has shown how their stories relate to who they are and how they see themselves, and that Access to HE is about lives and agency in which personal responsibility and risk also have their part to play in the transitions and transformations of these students. Chapter 9 reflects on some of the major themes that have emerged throughout the book, and teases out what these themes tell us about the significance and importance of the Access to HE Diploma. The chapter also reflects on the main theoretical and methodological questions raised in the previous chapters about agency, identity and learning among these students, and examines how educational institutions and governmental policies can better support these kinds of learners, and widen access to HE.
