ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part focuses on policy communities in physical activity, and the significance of physical activity in the treatment and prevention of depression. It explains that despite the evidence for exercise as therapy, the prescription and promotion of exercise programmes for preventing and treating depression is limited. The part highlights the significance of nature-based practices in creating learning opportunities for physical activity, health and wellbeing. It examines the challenges that arise in developing sustainable use of the natural environment for outdoor recreation, and highlights a history of difference and convergence in decision making agendas. The part suggests that the UK sport policy agenda has always been based on the twin objectives of promoting elite performance and mass participation. It highlights advocacy of elite sport as a means of inspiring people to take part in physical activity in the UK and worldwide remains political rhetoric.
