ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part describes a variety of programmes and practices that have sought to enhance physical activity provision for different population groups. It explores the issues and challenges in attempting to develop positive outcomes from interventions, judged by both formal evaluations and more personal and political unintended outcomes. The part discusses the use of a 'critical discourse analysis' approach, which involves a close critical examination of the ideas which inform policy. It examines a charity programme running for over a decade in the UK. The part provides a comparative analysis of the most recent two Summer Olympic Games in London and Rio in order to consider how much effort is put into implementing physical activity legacy goals. It discusses the interplay between benefits, examines the place of cycling in urban environments and the potential for cultural habits and priorities to change in favour of cycling-friendly cities.
