ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses action research that is outcome based and efficacious and summarizes the need for quality evaluation procedures for the counseling and supervision process. It is our ethical and professional responsibility to understand what makes counseling effective. These days of managed care have made us more aware of our efficacy and called for accountability of our services. It is also important that people investigate not only the efficacy of counseling but also the validity of psychotherapy. Many of the self-regulation skills practiced in neurotherapy (NT) and neurofeedback (NFB) are perfect for adding to peoples' self-regulation repertoire and knowledge base. Neurotherapy is any change to the neurons, neuromodulation that may alter neuronal functioning. Two main professional association guidelines provide the majority of the standards for efficacy levels and ratings: the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB) guidelines. Both guidelines have their highest efficacy ratings mandating empirical evidence demonstrating efficacy and specificity.
