ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the fourth part of this book. The part focuses on the function of critical incidents within secure forensic services, exploring the motivations of those who engage in events such as roof-top protests, barricades and hostage taking. It provides the reader with additional knowledge and understanding to fill current gaps in the field when exploring why individuals might engage in such behaviour, what maintains this behaviour, and what might also protect and buffer against it. The part also focuses on bullying in secure settings, emphasising a need to take a more holistic approach to understanding and managing prisoner-to-prisoner bullying. It argues that this must be done by moving away from an over-focus on the individual, and by not attempting to integrate bullying behaviours with self-injurious behaviours. The part offers a clear background to this area, highlighting where more recent problems in understanding issues in this field are presenting.
