ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of how various facets of positive psychological well-being (e.g. optimism, positive emotions, purpose in life) are associated with physical health outcomes including incident disease, positive conceptualizations of health, and longevity. We explore two pathways that may link psychological well-being with physical health: (1) indirect buffering against the sequelae of stress and (2) direct influences on biological and behavioural functioning. We then identify intervention strategies that may improve positive psychological well-being and consider whether improving well-being by these intervention strategies may lead to improved physical health. Finally, limitations of existing evidence and future directions are discussed.
