ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the prevalence and impact of sexual assault and harassment during military service (MSA) on male Service Members and Veterans. It also summarizes evidence from the literature and the authors’ clinical practice and explores some common struggles in recovery for these men, such as masculinity and sexuality concerns, anger, shame, sadness, and isolation. Next, we briefly review important treatment themes and therapeutic approaches. Finally, we summarize additional resources for both clinicians and survivors. We hope providers from a variety of backgrounds will find this information helpful to understanding the needs of all men who experienced MSA. We also hope it provides encouragement and hope to all male survivors, especially to those sexually traumatized in the military.
