ABSTRACT
This chapter explains party–military relations and the generalship of the Korean People’s Army. First, it shows how the party–military relationship was transformed during the war and how Kim Il Sung used it for his own political interests. The creation of the General Political Bureau was the one of the most significant events for the creation of the North Korean garrison state because it was the beginning of the politicization of the Korean People’s Army and the militarization of North Korean society. Second, this chapter examines how Kim Il Sung failed to use his generals’ capabilities and experiences because of his political considerations.
