ABSTRACT

Technological progress has long been recognized as one of the major determinants of U.S. dominance in world agricultural production. It is thus not surprising that historically much research has been devoted to the study of the nature of this process. Today interest in the measurement of technological change is particularly important because of an ever-increasing world population and the implicit recognition of a U.S. role in alleviating world food shortages. The accurate measurement of technical change is vital to an understanding of its nature and causes.
