ABSTRACT
The link between forms of citizenship and the ordering of space is nothing new. It can be traced back to the dawn of historical civilisations, when societies established and organised themselves in space, drawing up external borders to set themselves apart and defend themselves from “others” as well as internal borders to organise their domestic orders in space and distinguish between and reinforce, symbolically and physically, social hierarchies. In this chapter I shall attempt to explain the manner in which this link endured over time.
