ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses leadership courses and formal leadership development programs, both curricular and co-curricular, and both on and off campus, and the valuable lessons students learned from these. Colleges and universities generally believe that leader development should be part of their responsibility for preparing individuals to participate in a democratic and progressive society. In courses, certificates, minors, and majors, students learn about formal theories of leadership as well as receiving assessments, skill and competency development, and experiential opportunities. In addition to leadership courses, certificates, minors, and majors, many colleges and universities offer co-curricular leadership development programs. Self-identity is who you are, combining your values, your experiences, and how you perceive yourself. Students learned more about themselves through their leadership courses and their leadership development activities. When the students mentioned learning teamwork while in a course or leadership development program, they learned about teamwork, and practiced it in a safer and more risk-free environment.
