ABSTRACT
You can do restoration without masks, but mask making is an essential skill if you want to do really good restoration work. Masks let you apply changes to parts of photographs so that you can control precisely where and how strongly an adjustment changes the photo. A mask has no direct effect on a photograph; it merely governs the adjustment. In other words, a mask is a means to an end, not an end in itself.
