ABSTRACT

A successful High Performance Learning school is a place of scholarship that exudes interest and celebration of all types of learning. Important in High Performance Learning is the recognition that learning is a carefully orchestrated journey, and so the longer a student is exposed to the High Performance Learning framework in school the greater the effects are likely to be. Assessment of teaching quality should be rigorous, but it is likely to be largely peer to peer with occasional benchmarking by senior teams and systematic coaching of weak teachers to develop them. Research over many years on effective school leadership is unanimous in pointing to the need for the school head teachers to be the proactive leaders of learning. A world class school needs great teaching, and good teaching should be celebrated while any underperformance needs to be remedied. So performance management discussions should start with the person to be assessed being encouraged to give a self-assessment.
