ABSTRACT
Careers scholars could provide a great service by helping people learn to set their own course at this stage of life. There is an atmosphere of popular distrust of political leaders around the world, with many people feeling that nobody is looking out for them, and their seeing that most of the benefits of economic prosperity are going to the top 1 percent of earners in their countries. The career model that was agreed upon by the members of the 5C project is an example of a group of scholars holding discussions over time, working collaboratively as a group, and agreeing on what would be high-impact research questions. In a satisfactory adjustment to retirement, the person finds meaning. For some people who have been socialized by decades of responding to the expectations of others they may be in a state of learned helplessness when they have high autonomy.
