ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a comparative analysis of general body and skeletal morphology and their relationships to muscle function. The Neanderthal morphology is used as a comparison to draw distinctions between the adaptations favouring either endurance or power as a way of managing the ecology and obtaining the required nourishment. The evidence from the skeletal remains of our distant relatives suggests that muscle morphology was likely adapted to favour endurance and, by definition, fatigue resistance.
