ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the environment of care via the Military Health System. It explores how military culture and the environment of care affect the biopsychosocial aspects of pregnancy. The chapter also discusses how military culture and the military health system can affect the experience of pregnancy and parenting among various roles in the military family system. Military Medicine has the potential to develop multi-specialty programs to assess, diagnosis and treat perinatal mental health disorders. Military pediatricians are in the "front line" caring for US military children and their families and play a critical role in identifying how well or poorly a child or family responds to major stressors such as deployment or parent mental health issues. Military behavioral health has been at the forefront of the treatment of mental disorders for the active duty service member. Military behavioral health recognizes the influence of mental health in the military spouse.
