Fourth, we used the dependent variable employment growth. Although conceptually different, employment growth is correlated with other growth indicators such as sales growth (Delmar 1997; Weinzimmer, Nystrom, and Freeman 1998). However, the relationship between growth and profitability is only moderate (Combs, Crook, and Shook 2005) and sometimes even absent (Markman and Gartner 2002). In addition, employment growth is a relatively specific performance criterion. It is more likely to identify culturespecific effects at a specific level of abstractness (Norenzayan and Heine 2005). Future research should test whether culture has the same role in predicting other performance criteria.
