ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the gendered, ideological, and economic basis of climate change skepticism or denialism. Climate change skepticism is an organized movement funded by conservative groups and foundations. Many of these funders have links to industries with an interest in avoiding environmental and economic regulations that designs to slow the causes of climate change. The chapter examines the characteristics and extent of climate change skepticism generally. It focuses specifically on the place of gender in climate change denialism. The role of economic interests in challenging climate change reports and sponsoring climate change legislation is, on its face, gender neutral, although many fewer women involves in political efforts to deny the effects of climate change. The chapter describes that climate denialist funding has not stopped, rather it has gone underground in order to hide its economic motivation. Conservative climate skeptics are not the only groups mobilizing around climate change.
