ABSTRACT

In lots of educational literature, parent involvement is defined by parents physically coming to the school building and volunteering. This is largely due to the reluctance of some schools to view parent roles in relation to education differently than they previously had. The apparent unwillingness to acknowledge or embrace change has forced many teachers to view parent involvement from this narrow perspective. Though many aspects of schooling (i.e., technology, assessment, pedagogical knowledge, and scheduling) have undergone admirable changes in recent years, the understanding that parents of today are different from those we may have grown accustomed to has been ignored in many schools. In many schools across the country, parent involvement continues to be reserved for those parents who happen to be available during the regular school day.
