ABSTRACT

A description of the governmental and transport industry structures in the United Kingdom (Greater Britain and Northern Ireland), and the Irish Republic. Particular attention is paid to recent developments in devolution of powers to Greater London, Scotland and Wales, and the structure of transport operations following privatisation of the rail industry, and the deregulation and privatisation of most parts of the bus industry. The regulatory system is also described. This chapter sets the framework for statistical data provided in later chapters.
