ABSTRACT

This chapter begins to map out the journey that will lead to one becoming a sport and exercise psychologist. It helps readers to think about the important competencies, characteristics, and qualities required to be an effective sport and exercise psychologist. The chapter outlines the professional training route one need to follow if one want to turn their interest in a career as a sport and exercise psychologist into reality. Sport and exercise psychologists typically focus in either sport psychology or exercise psychology. This is often down to personal choice and people's preference to work in one or other of those settings. In its application to practitioner psychology, competence is best described as professional ability to engage in habitual and judicious evidence-based practice that is consistent with people education and training. The ongoing competence requirements for sustained effective sport psychology practice can then be derived from the practice of experts.
