ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some of the challenges and issues that individuals typically experience when starting out, along with the sources of assistance and knowledge that help them cope, survive, and thrive as sport and exercise psychologists in the UK. The time and space boundaries in applied sport and exercise psychology can be looser and more ambiguous than in other sub-disciplines. People may have gathered from the preceding discussion that sport and exercise psychologists continue to learn a great deal about themselves and how to help clients after they have finished training. Reflection is the central mechanism by which sport and exercise psychologists develop their knowledge and skills for helping athletes and exercisers. When asked, practitioners often say that interaction with clients is the most common experience through which they reflect and learn about service delivery. Supervision is another experience that allows sport and exercise psychologists to reflect on their skills and knowledge.
