ABSTRACT

I think it’s important that we all try to give something to this medium, instead of just thinking about what is the most effi cient way of telling a story or making an audience stay in a cinema.

From its beginnings, fi lmmaking as form and practice has depended on and been defi ned by its technology. Changes in fi lm technology have changed fi lm as a medium throughout its history-its expressive abilities as well as business and distribution practices. A major impact of new technology on fi lmmaking was the introduction of sound in the s. Th is expanded the medium and also ended many careers of early movie stars, whose voices did not match their on-screen personas. Th e fi rst “talking feature fi lm” or “talkie” was Th e Jazz Singer (), produced by Daryll F. Zanuck and directed by Alan Crosland. It became a major box offi ce hit and ushered in the era of “synchronized sound” fi lm production. Already by , talking pictures were the norm.
